The OTT Sound: When Should You Use OTT?
OTT is the free multiband compressor that bass music producers cannot live without, and also the one most likely to be overused. In three minutes this video from Spaces explains what the OTT sound actually is and, more importantly, when you should and should not reach for it. Why it is a fresh way to get producing: understanding OTT turns it from a magic loudness button into a deliberate creative tool. Used well, it adds bite to basses, sparkle to leads and aggression to drums. Used everywhere, it squashes the life out of a mix. After watching, put OTT on one sound at a time, sweep the depth control and listen carefully to what changes. Then try it on a full drum bus or a reese bass and compare. It is free from Xfer Records and built into Ableton as a Multiband Dynamics preset, so you can start experimenting right away without spending anything.
