The Classic 2-Step UK Garage Drum Pattern in Two Minutes

Ad

Two-step is the shuffle that powered pirate radio, Sunday garage sessions and half the UK bass music that came after it. The trick is that it never sits on a straight four-to-the-floor, and in about two minutes STRANJAH shows you exactly how the groove is built. Start with snares on beats two and four and a kick on the one, then lay closed hats on every quarter note with open hats in between. Fill the 16th-note gaps with quiet ghost hats, push the swing up, and add rimshots on the off positions for extra bounce. From there he shifts, drops and adds kicks to turn the same skeleton into several related grooves, including a couple of tricks borrowed from drum and bass. Why it is worth your time: once you can program this in a minute, you have the backbone for garage, speed garage, bassline and UK funky. Build it, then try moving one kick at a time until the pattern starts to skip.
