Best Compressor and Limiter Plugins for Punchy, Loud Underground Tracks
Ad
Dynamics processing is what turns a loop into a record. Here’s our shortlist.
Compressors
- FabFilter Pro-C 2 (paid) – one plugin, many characters (clean, punchy, opto, bus, mastering) with a brilliant display. If you buy one compressor, buy this.
- TDR Kotelnikov (free) – a transparent, mastering-grade compressor from Tokyo Dawn Labs. Absurdly good for free.
- TDR Molotok (free) – the more colourful sibling, great for drums.
- Universal Audio / other 1176, LA-2A and SSL bus emulations (paid) – classic hardware flavours; most vendors run regular sales.
- Your DAW’s glue compressor – Ableton’s Glue, Logic’s Vintage VCA mode, FL’s Fruity Limiter – often all you need.
Limiters
- FabFilter Pro-L 2 (paid) – the industry favourite for transparent loudness and true-peak control.
- iZotope Ozone Maximizer (paid) – excellent, especially inside Ozone’s mastering suite.
- LoudMax (free) – a simple, clean look-ahead limiter that punches above its price.
- Kilohearts Limiter (free in Essentials) – handy on busses.
Techniques for underground genres
- Sidechain the bass to the kick. Essential in psytrance, where the bassline sits between kick hits, and in techno. Use a compressor with an external sidechain or a volume-shaper tool.
- Parallel compression on drums: blend a heavily squashed copy under the dry signal for weight without losing transients.
- Bus compression at 1.5–2 dB of gain reduction glues drums or the whole mix.
- Limit last, and gently. Aim for loudness that still breathes; streaming platforms normalise loudness anyway, so crushing a track rarely helps.
- Check true peak to avoid distortion after encoding.
