Thread: Are Paid Plugins Still Worth It When Free Ones Are This Good?

Ad

Five years ago, “free plugin” meant “nice try”. Not any more. Vital, Surge XT, TDR Kotelnikov, Valhalla Supermassive and Airwindows all compete with commercial products. So why are we still spending money?

The case for free

  • Sound quality gaps have narrowed massively; many blind tests online struggle to tell top free and paid tools apart in a mix.
  • Open-source projects like Surge XT and Airwindows keep improving through community contributions.
  • No licence headaches – no iLok, no account logins, easy reinstalls.
  • Learning: a limited toolkit pushes you to learn fundamentals.

The case for paid

  • Workflow: paid plugins often save time with better interfaces, visual feedback, presets and A/B features. Time is money.
  • Support and updates: compatibility with new OS versions and Apple silicon arrives faster.
  • Character: specific hardware emulations and unique algorithms you can’t get elsewhere.
  • Supporting developers keeps the ecosystem alive – including the companies that release free tools.

Where we land

Start free. Upgrade only when you hit a specific limitation you can name (“I need a dynamic EQ with mid/side and linear phase”) – not because a YouTuber said so. Then buy in sales; most big developers discount heavily several times a year.

The question

Has a paid plugin ever genuinely changed your music, or could you make the same track with free tools? Tell us which plugin, and why, in the comments. Let’s settle it.
